CTK - April 8, 2003

USTI NAD LABEM, North Bohemia, April 8 (CTK) - Kosovo Albanian Ziajdin Isma, charged with murder by shooting in a casino in Teplice, north Bohemia, was today sentenced to 13 years in prison by the Regional Court in Usti nad Labem.

Isma lodged an appeal against the court decision, while the State Attorney did not apply her right to appeal. The court stated that Isma had shot a casino guest dead and wounded the casino co-owner by an illegally possessed gun. Both victims came from the countries of former Yugoslavia.

Isma himself suffered a serious injury in the shooting incident. However, the police have not succeeded in tracing the other shooter who wounded Isma.

According to expert's reports and some witnesses, it was Isma who took out a gun first and pointed it exactly at the victims. The court concluded that no one had threatened Isma at the moment.

Therefore Isma was sentenced for an attempted murder of two people and for illegal possession of arms. Besides, he has to pay 164,400 crowns as a compensation of injuries to the wounded casino co-owner.

With regards to the fact that Isma was never sentenced before and the experts do not consider him an aggressive person, he will serve the sentence in a specially guarded prison.
