Unilateral independence by Kosovo 'illegal and immoral': Putin

SOFIA, Jan 18 2008 - Russian President Vladimir Putin said here Friday that a unilateral declaration of independence by Kosovo would be "illegal and immoral" and Russia would not support it.

"A unilateral declaration of independence by Kosovo and its eventual support from the international community would be illegal and immoral and Russia cannot support such a solution to the problem," Putin told a press conference.

Kosovo has threatened to declare independence in the coming weeks after talks with Belgrade on the future status of the province failed.

Serbia, a traditional ally of Moscow, opposes anything greater than autonomy for the majority ethnic Albanian province
