ATHENS, April 4 - The Greek EU presidency Friday hailed
Serbia and Montenegro's entry into the
Council of Europe, a 45-member
intergovernmental human rights organisation. "The presidency welcomes the
accession of Serbia and Montenegro to
the Council of Europe as an important
step forward to the country's rapprochement with European institutions," it said
in a statement.
The EU also expressed satisfaction at the country's pledge to "fully honour all
commitments and obligations" following membership of the Council.
On Thursday, human rights group Amnesty International urged the new nation of
Serbia and Montenegro, founded out of
the ashes of Yugoslavia, to end a climate of impunity surrounding war crimes
committed in the Balkan wars.
