Agence France Presse - July 24, 2003
BELGRADE, July 24 - The International Standardization Organization has
decided that SCG will be the new international abbreviation for Europe's newest
state of Serbia and Montenegro, Tanjug news agency reported Thursday.
The abbreviation will officially be used for cars, currency and by sports teams
at international competitions, Ljiljana Pavkovic-Bugarski of the National
Standardization Bureau told the agency.
Instead of the acronym YU, used until now as the Internet abbreviation for
Yugoslavia, the new one will be CS, coming from Crna Gora which is Montenegrin
for 'Black Mountain', she added.
The numerical code 891 that is being used in electronic business will remain the
same, Pavkovic-Bugarski said.
Serbia and Montenegro were the last two republics in the Yugoslav federation and
they decided to stay in a loose union when Yugoslavia was officially disbanded
earlier this year.
