BELGRADE -- Wednesday – A Serbian newspaper reports today that a senior member of Zoran Djindjic’s government was behind his murder.

Citing three independent sources, Nedeljni Telegraf claims that security cameras show a member of the Serbian government entering the headquarters of the Zemun Gang – the mafia group said to have organised the killing. Telegraf reports that the upcoming trial of those accused of pulling the trigger will reveal their political backers: “So far, no one has wanted to raise the question of the political background to the crime. Obviously that is being left to the trial, i.e. to the mosaic that will reveal the face of whoever is behind the killing.”

The article adds that the commission set up to investigate the murder was told of the involvement of a government member in the assassination on March 12. “One of the people questioned… linked that very member of the government to the murder,” writes Telegraf.

The minister in charge of the commission, Deputy Prime Minister Zarko Korac, today denied any such information had emerged: “The commission said everything it had to say. Had it believed such information was relevant it would have certainly included it in the commission report. There was absolutely no statement that could be regarded this way,” Korac told B92.
