MILOSEVIC RISING

Belgrade, 17 February: Citizens of Serbia today have a more positive attitude
towards former Yugoslav President Slobodan Milosevic than three years ago, a
poll by the Faktor Plus agency has revealed.
According to the results presented at a news conference today, a third of
citizens or 33.6 per cent have a positive attitude towards Milosevic.
In April 2002, 22.02 per cent of citizens held a positive opinion about
Milosevic.
The poll was carried out in February on a random sample of 1,582 residents of
Serbia aged over 18.
Positive attitude towards Milosevic has been rising steadily, with minor
oscillations, and in September 2004 29.3 per cent of pollees held a positive
opinion of Milosevic.
Vladimir Pejic, director general of the Faktor Plus agency, today said that this
percentage was probably rising because following Milosevic's deposition the
authorities had failed to live up to citizens' expectations.
As he said, this is aided further by Milosevic's trial before the Hague
tribunal, that is, Milosevic succeeding in portraying his defence as the defence
of national interests. (passage omitted)
