Bomb damages rails in northwestern Macedonia
DPA - March 17, 2003
Kumanovo, Macedonia -- A bomb blast damaged the international
Skopje-to-Belgrade rail line in northwestern Macedonia early on Monday, police
said.
No one was reported injured in the explosion, which occurred minutes after a
local train passed the site of the incident, state- run news agency MIA
reported.
Macedonia's Ministry of Interior immediately dispatched an anti- terrorist unit
to the Kumanovo area, but no other details were made available.
Tensions in Albanian-dominated northwestern Macedonia increased unexpectedly in
2003, after the underground Albanian National Army announced a "spring
offensive".
In a similar incident two weeks ago, two NATO soldiers were killed after a
landmine exploded beneath their jeep near Kumanovo.
