Hague “suspicious” of Belgrade claims

THE HAGUE -- Wednesday (FoNet) – The Hague Tribunal prosecution said today that it was suspicious of Belgrade’s claim that a number of documents demanded by the prosecution appeared to have been destroyed in the 1999 NATO bomb attacks on Yugoslavia.

A conference with Belgrade representatives has been scheduled in The Hague on Monday to discuss Belgrade’s alleged lack of cooperation.

In its statement today the prosecution also alleged that the government of Serbia-Montenegro had lied in its claims of cooperation with the tribunal.

It also denied claims by Belgrade that the tribunal was applying political pressure.

The prosecution claimed that it had never sought open access to state archives but only insight into the holdings to determine which documents were relevant to the court’s proceedings.

On the matter of the documents allegedly destroyed in the bombing, the prosecution said it was “sceptical to say the least” about the claim that copies of such important documents were not held elsewhere.

The Hague prosecution claimed that Serbia-Montenegro was failing to cooperate by not volunteering relevant documentation but demanding detailed requests for documents to which Belgrade responded when and how it pleased.
