BELGRADE -- Thursday – Vojislav Kostunica’s Democratic Party of Serbia has accused the Serbian government of using the state of emergency for a showdown with its political opponents.

“The state of emergency is also being used by the government to introduce censorship in the media and block the free flow of information,” said the party’s chief whip in the Serbian parliament, Dejan Mihajlov.

He told media in Krusevac last night that the government was attempting to revert to a one-party system by use of force.

“If the state of emergency endures, we will certainly see that its only purpose is to deny the political and other freedoms of the citizens,” said Mihajlov.

He added that those who had imposed the state of emergency were exactly those who had caused it by failing to prevent the assassination of Zoran Djindjic.

“The Democratic Party of Serbia will insist that the state commission be set up to investigate all the circumstances leading up to the state of emergency and the responsibility of those who failed to carry out their duties,” said Mihajlov.
