HDZ distributed calendars with Pavelić portrait

The HDZ of Sesvete distributed on New Year's a calendar titled "Historical Croatia," with the page for every month bore an image of a notable Croatian historical figure, from [medieval princes] Trpimir, Domagoj and Branimir, to Franjo Tuđman, whose picture graces the December 2004 page.

Interestingly, the HDZ received two different versions of the calendar. Of some 300 calendars they ordered from Široki Brijeg [in Bosnia], the Sesvete branch of HDZ received 150 with the photo of Ustaša fuehrer Ante Pavelić on the October page, while the rest had the picture of Ljudevita Gaja and the Illyrian movement.

Chairman of Sesvete HDZ Ivan Dujmović said he had ordered the calendar after seeing the Illyrian version, and that they were distributing the calendars to their members and sympathizers only after ripping out the pages with Pavelić, quotes Jutarnji list. The paper added that several hours after giving this statement, Dujmović denied they had received two versions of the calendar, and said they had none with the picture of Pavelić.

Spokesman for the HDZ said that the party had nothing to do with these calendars, and that this must have been a provocation, while the Sesvete HDZ branch claimed Pavelić had to have been a plant by the rival Croatian Bloc.
