SUSPECTED EXPLOSIVE FOUND IN CAR ON SERBIAN BORDER FOLLOWING
Hungarian News Agency (MTI) - April 22, 2005

Budapest, April 22 (MTI) - Explosives experts removed an object believed to be a detonator and timer from a car crossing into Hungary from Serbia on Friday, after a sniffer dog signalled the presence of explosives.

The car, which had Austrian plates and was driven by an ethnic Albanian from Kosovo, crossed into Hungary from Serbia on Friday and was pulled out of line when a dog signalled explosives at a spot near the fuel tank. The border crossing was partly closed for nearly six hours, slowing down normal passenger traffic, as explosive experts investigated. They found what they believed to be a detonator with a timer, which they removed from the vehicle and sent to a police laboratory in Budapest for testing.

The driver, whose name was not released, said he had bought the car only three days earlier, and had no idea of the detonator-like object. However, border registration records found that he had crossed into Hungary in the same vehicle on March 28, suggesting that he had owned the car for a longer time than he alleged.
