BBC Monitoring Europe (Political) - September 6, 2006, Wednesday

Text of report by "A.D." entitled: "Former Al-Qa'idah officer in detention", published by Bosnian newspaper Oslobodjenje on 6 September

Oslobodjenje has unofficially learned that Bahrain national Ali Ahmed Ali Hamad, who is currently serving a 12-year term in the Zenica penitentiary, was detained by the Banja Luka CJB [Public Security Centre] on Tuesday [5 September] at 1400 hours.

According to information we received, Ali Hamad, former Al-Qa'idah officer, went to Banja Luka after being released from prison on furlough to offer the Glas Srpske newspaper his book containing his testimonies about Al-Qa'idah. The Banja Luka CJB refused to explain why he had been detained.

Ali Hamad, who was sentenced on charges of terrorism and planting a car bomb in Mostar in 1997, has thus far spent eight years in the Zenica prison. Over the course of the past few years, he has contacted local and foreign investigators from prison on several occasions, offering them his story about Al-Qa'idah in B-H and worldwide.
