SERBIA HAILS PUTIN WARNING OF POSSIBLE VETO ON
UN KOSOVO DECISION
BBC Monitoring International Reports - September 11, 2006 Monday
Text of report by Serbian radio on 11 September
The Serbian government welcomed a statement by President Putin that Moscow could
cast a veto if UN Security Council tried to adopt a decision on the status of
Kosovo and Metohija that was contrary to Russian interests, said Srdjan Djuric,
director of the Serbian government office for cooperation with media.
[Djuric] We believe that Putin's statement on Kosovo and Metohija is definitely
of the highest importance for Serbia, for safeguarding our fundamental state and
national interests. Putin's stance is principled and entirely in keeping with
the highest standards of international law, and most importantly, it is in the
spirit of preserving peace and stability. The state and government of Serbia, by
defending Kosovo, are also defending fundamental principles on which
international order rests. [End of recording]
