Decani, 13 June: UNMIK [UN Interim Administration Mission in Kosovo] official Luis Perez [agency spelling] was seriously injured in the centre of Decani yesterday evening when he was attacked and beaten by four civilians, the Kosovo Police Service has announced in a statement.

Perez, who sustained serious injuries to the head, was attacked at around 2200 [2000 gmt] as he was entering the building where he lived.

The statement says that Perez was injured when he offered resistance to the attackers.

This is the second attack on UNMIK officials since 18 May when UNMIK Chief Joachim Ruecker ordered the Municipal Assembly in Decani to return part of the land to [Serb] Orthodox Monastery Visoki Decani which had been seized a long time ago.

The Municipal Assembly in Decani refused to implement Ruecker's decision on the return of property to the monastery and decided to sever all contacts with UNMIK representatives.
